J-E-T Middle School held its annual Veterans Day Celebration, “Honoring All Who Served,” on Friday, November 8. Students, teachers, parents, and veterans filled one side of the gymnasium for the morning’s festivities.

After a welcome by Assistant Principal Jason Schumpert and the recitation of the Pledge of Allegiance and the J-E-T Middle School Creed, led by Ryan Rosier and Cade Quarles, seventh and eighth grade band students, under the direction of Mrs. Angelyn Dorn, performed “The Star-Spangled Banner” and, later in the program, an arrangement of “Fields of Glory” by Elliot Del Borgo. Student choral performances, led by Mrs. Candance Craig, included “The Pledge of Allegiance,” arranged by Linda Spevacek, and “We Are the Voices of Freedom with America the Beautiful,” arranged by Kirby Shaw.

Student speakers included Tyrone Brown, who read a poem titled “Veterans Day” by Cheryl Dyson; Lillian Cockrell, who shared the history of Veterans Day; and Julissa Palma, who presented an original essay “What Makes America Great.” Dr. Patricia Moseley also addressed the audience on the topics of the love of one’s people, one’s community, and one’s country.

The audience fell silent as Mrs. Ruth Bledsoe read
America’s White Table by Margot Theis Raven while her sixth-grade students set a table as a visual reminder of the sacrifices both veterans and their families make. “It is sometimes easy to forget that those who serve must give up special moments with their families,” commented Mrs. Bledsoe, “and many gave the ultimate sacrifice so that we are able to live in the land of the free.”

At the program’s conclusion, Principal Debbie Courtney invited all veterans and current service members to stay for refreshments and fellowship. Students returned to their daily classes, enriched with a better understanding of the importance of recognizing and celebrating our veterans.
