Johnston-Edgefield-Trenton Middle School (J-E-T) welcomed two University of South Carolina Aiken (USCA) volleyball players for Read Across America Week. Juniors, Kelsey Spurlin and Avery Macklin came to J-E-T and read to the sixth, seventh and eighth grade girls and spoke to them about the importance of reading and receiving an education. Spurlin, a middle level English education major, spoke to the girls about, “loser language” and how important it is to think positively and to set goals for themselves.  “A lot of what they said made sense. I am a leader and I can make good decisions. I am beginning my morning every morning with positive sayings,” eighth grade student Kyra Miller said. Christy Caldwell, a seventh grade social studies teacher at J-E-T invited the girls to come and speak. “I felt as though our girls needed a little one on one time with other girls who they could relate to. I am so happy that they came and I know the girls left encouraged,” Caldwell said.
