Unusual Visitors Come to J-E- T

Sixth grade science teacher Ms. Pamela Bates was pleased to invite Mr. Sean Poppy of
the Savannah River Site Ecology Lab to Johnston-Edgefield- Trenton (J-E- T) Middle School. Mr.
Poppy has a very busy schedule visiting schools to talk to students about local wildlife and is
often difficult to book. Sometimes he has to be scheduled a year in advance. Ms. Bates was very
grateful he could make the trip on Wednesday, March 28, after his visit to Wardlaw Academy.

Mr. Poppy came to Ms. Bates’s last two classes of the day and explained the difference
between reptiles and mammals, being warm-blooded versus being cold-blooded, and what
survival in the wild was like, all of which served as a review of the standards being taught in Ms.
Bates’s class. To illustrate his points, he brought some friends with him. These friends included
multiple non-venomous snakes, a tortoise, frogs, a coyote, a sixth-month- old alligator, a two-
year-old alligator, and a hawk. All of these were rescue animals. Mr. Poppy explained that he
frequently saves injured animals or animals in danger, even going so far as to pick up snakes on
the highway. The hawk he brought can no longer fly and is totally dependent on humans. He
even allowed the students to hold the animals. One student, Katlyn Chinn, remarked, "Mr. Poppy
told us great details. My favorite animal was the coyote because it was an animal I’d never seen
in real life."

Ms. Bates hopes that Mr. Poppy will be able to return to J-E- T next year and in the years
to come. She said, "The children thoroughly enjoyed his visit."
