Ms. Courtney holding awardJ-E-T Middle School’s principal, Debbie Courtney was recognized as South Carolina’s International Reading Association’s (IRA) Distinguished Literacy Administrator at its meeting on February 15, 2017. ”The IRA helps teachers teach reading regardless of the subject they teach. Over 90% of J-E-T’s teachers are members of the IRA because they see the value in the organization,” said Courtney.

South Carolina’s International Reading Association believes the ability to read, write, and communicate connects people and empowers them to achieve things they never thought possible. Literacy is the ability to identify, understand, interpret, create, compute, and communicate using visual, audible, and digital materials across disciplines and in any context.

“We are proud of Debbie Courtney. Her recognition is warranted and exemplifies the work of the faculty and staff at J-E-T does year in and year out,” stated Dr. Robert Maddox, ECSD superintendent. Membership in the IRA is open to anyone interested in increasing literacy in Edgefield County.
