J.D. and Judah Davis are twins who play football for Clemson University. Both linebackers, they were a part of the team that became national champions in 2016 and have been on the Dean’s list, displaying both their academic and athletic abilities. These young men were invited by seventh grade teacher Christy Caldwell to come speak to the seventh and eighth grade boys of Johnston-Edgefield-Trenton (J-E-T) Middle School on Friday, February 23, on the importance of education and in celebration of Black History Month.

The Davis brothers began by holding up a college textbook and telling the students that they would have to be able to read and study that to be able to read and study a playbook. They explained that colleges require you to perform well in the classroom before walking out onto the field to play any sport. The grades have to be good. They also described the importance of having good character, being honest, listening to your teachers and other adults, and being your best, all of which support the Edgefield County School District model of world-class citizenship. They told the boys that this included following school rules and showing respect and responsibility, which goes hand-in-hand with J-E-T’s creed. The Davises concluded by saying that the boys needed to be young men of character everywhere they go starting now and to always be ready to learn because even the two of them still learn every day. After their speech, the Davis twins let the students hold their championship rings and took pictures with any students who asked. They even stayed after school to meet with any of the other students and teachers who wished to speak with them or have their pictures taken with them.
